We sat down with James White of Signalnoise Studios to find out how he got started in the world of art and graphic design.
“I started drawing when I was four years old and really it's been a lifelong thing. I’m 41 now, I started drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil. I drew all the way through school and at the end of high school I didn't know what I was going to do. I didn't know what graphic design was, I didn't know what a logo was or anything like that. I had a meeting with my my guidance counsellor and I'm like the one kid that he actually helped get in the right industry!”
“So because of all the drawing experience he said you might be interested in graphic design directed me to a community college in my small hometown. It was a one-year course and that pretty much set me up for the rest of my life. Everything after that has just been a result of taking that one graphic design course.”
“So I was a graphic designer like a web designer and stuff for about 10 or 12 years but then in 2010 I struck out as a freelancer because the personal work I was doing on my own time, started getting me a lot of attention online with bigger clients. So I was working at my agency job during the day where I was working on websites for local store or gas stations or whatever. And then I would go home and I'd stay up until 3 in the morning working with MTV on their new VH1 relaunch.”
“And then I got to a point where I was thinking - what the hell am I doing? I just got rid of the daytime job and started doing working for myself on my own projects full-time. And yeah, I’ve been doing it for 8 years now.”
